Skills

I bake a pretty mean loaf of pumpkin bread. Also, these things:

Visual and UX Design

It's not enough to know your way around Adobe Creative Cloud (which I do). Good design is rooted in nature, math, psychology...and enormous student loans. I've learned to embrace and leverage them all.

HTML and CSS

Primarily a visual designer, I'm rapidly advancing in front-end development. Thanks to my programmer friends, some good online resources, and Bootstrap, I can code my own responsive emails and landing pages. Next up: JavaScript.

Communication and Presentation

Whether art directing my staff or selling a concept to a client, I always make an intelligent and persuasive case for my design decisions. What good is an excellent product if no one's buying in?

Training and Experience

Here's the stuff that shaped me. (If there's a shape called “awesome.”)

  • 2019–present

    Senior Visual Designer
    POP

I'm currently on a web redesign project for a major communications client. In a few short weeks I've learned Adobe Experience Manager and several collaboration and project management tools.

  • 2007–present

    Digital Designer
    Redapt

In addition to visual design for print, web, and software applications at this Seattle-based tech company, I provide design direction for contracted agencies and freelancers.

  • 2013–2017

    Senior Web Designer
    Leggett & Platt

I led a small team of designers in creating responsive B2B websites, HTML emails, and digital graphics for online advertising and social media.

  • 2005–2013

    Graphic Designer
    Springfield-Branson National Airport

Brochures, websites, reports, signs, postcards, banners, t-shirts, logos, letterhead, patches, stickers, posters, fliers...if it was designed, I made it.

  • Summer 2003

    Creative Intern
    Noble

My stint at Noble taught me to use Lorem Ipsum, rich blacks, and mind maps. Oh, and coffee.
    Lots and lots of coffee.

  • 2000–2005

    BFA in Design
    Missouri State University

Like most good things in life, I didn't fully appreciate how important five years of color theory and typography would be until I got my first job.

Fun Facts About Me

This part is a delicate balance of "show them you're creative" and "don't scare them by being you."
I hope I got it right.

  1. My name looks like "Danny" but is pronounced “duh-nay.” I'm pretty sure my mom made it up.
  2. I was born the son of a share cropper. Just kidding – I got that from “The Jeffersons.” Remember that show?
  3. My college degree is in design, but once I started coding, I was hooked. I was already able to establish an effective visual hierarchy, group information logically, and maintain consistent branding. Now I don't have to wait for developers to build everything. The world is my oyster.
  4. I worked for Leggett & Platt for four years. L&P is a “diverse manufacturer and member of the S&P 500,” yet our corporate headquarters is situated smack-dab in the rural midwest. This is where I learned about responsive design. And best practices for UX. And CSS animation. And cow-tipping.
  5. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that I get to design web stuff for a living. In my free time, I like to...design web stuff. (Seriously. I think I need more outdoor hobbies.)
  1. My “15 minutes of fame” has trickled in over the years as a series of local TV commercials, B2B voiceovers, and one lucky encounter with the Four Tops at the now-defunct French Quarter Hotel in Memphis.
  2. I'm a natural redhead. This caused me a lot of grief in my childhood years, but I get compliments on it now.
  3. If I were to work in another field, I'd probably flip houses. I once tiled a bathroom floor by candlelight during a winter storm. Thin-set waits for no man.
  4. Mispronounciation drives me crazy. I'm grateful to those who correct my mistakes and I don't hesitate to do the same. This is rarely appreciated. (I'm sorry, but there's just no “x” in “espresso,” damn it.)
